Behind the From Line

By Dr. Joshua L. Keesler AFPC Civil Engineer Career Field Team

We have all been there. NexGen is already stacked with work orders. Then you open Outlook and find 50 new messages since the last time you checked. Another CE Career Field Team (CFT) email but the work in front of you is louder. Someone is at the door, on the phone, or another crisis is emerging. There is just never enough time. Why pay attention to that email? It is not addressed to you. It looks long. The sender is probably about to tell you something that will not make life any better or make the work go away. Or so I thought. This was me when I was in the shop. For many of us in CE, the work does not happen in a quiet office. It happens under a sink, in a mechanical room, or somewhere most people do not realize even exists on the installation. I told myself, “I do not have the bandwidth to read emails.” What I meant was “I did not think these messages were about my people, my team, or the work in front of me.” I thought that was a shop problem. It was not. Operations check emails between work orders. Engineering does it between design packages and construction meetings. Installation Management does it between housing, environmental, and real property suspenses. Readiness does it between training and the next exercise. Fire and EOD do it between the last call and the next one. Supervisors in every flight do it because the team comes first. The reason looks different in each flight. The deleted file is the same. I was wrong. The mail was never the problem. I had the wrong idea about what it was for and most importantly who sent it. Now, I sit on the CE CFT at AFPC. Every one of us is here on a career-broadening tour. We hail from familiar places like Environmental, Community Planning, Engineering, Housing, and Operations. We came from the field, and when our time at AFPC ends, we go back to it. The name on the ‘From’ line is not just a nameless AFPC box. We are you. We used to work where you work, and we will work there again. I did not see that from my shop. I did not know the person sending the mail had already stood in my shoes. You already know the CFT exists. You have seen our emails, our SharePoint, our webinars. We are the people on the other end of that email. Our experiences have uniquely prepared us to make a difference for you, your people, and your flight but only when used early. Wait and that is when things go sideways . You have a strong performer who is getting restless about the next ten years. A career counseling request is not extra homework, its retention. It is a chance for your performer to sit with someone from the same kind of work, clean up a resume, talk through transcripts, and get a straight answer about career broadening, intern pipelines, and what opportunities they can compete for. You keep a sharper employee longer. You have someone on a broadening clock and the rumors abound. The CFT does not own the next seat. We are not the hiring authority. Outplacement is still theirs. If your people wait for us to place them, they will run out of tour time and blame a process that was never built to hand out jobs. If they use us early, they walk into announcements with a package that looks like they meant it. That is the difference between a messy last six months and a clean handoff you can plan around. You have a manpower gap you cannot fill from inside the section. Force Renewal is how a Pathways intern, a Premier College Intern, or a PALACE Acquire intern fills that need. If our emails stay in the deleted file, the hole remains and the work stacks on the people who stayed. You have a package due, a move hanging, a request for personnel action that has been sitting, or a civilian who needs tuition assistance before the window closes. That is Force Management. It is unglamorous. It is also how someone’s family moves, tour, or class seat lives or dies. When that action stalls, it does not stall in the abstract. It stalls on your manning board. You have people being asked why they are not developing. Development Team work, civilian developmental education, Career Broadening, and Key Career Positions are how the field decides who is ready for more. We help them through that process. We cannot manufacture a record they never started. That has to be deliberate, and it has to start before the call goes out, not after they hear someone else got picked. If any of this is hitting a little too close to home, here is the part that is actually easy. You do not have to wait for a counseling package. If you just have a quick question or want to learn more, send a message through the MyCFT portal, Teams, or email. If you do want a fuller conversation, career counseling is set up to be simple on purpose. There is a QR code on the CFT SharePoint, or you can start in the MyCFT portal. It opens a short form: name, email, series, and what you want help with. Resume. Interview prep. Vectoring. PCIP. PAQ. Career broadening. You submit it. That request hits the team. We will ask you to put a current resume, and transcripts if they apply, in the MyCFT portal. That step does two things. It tells us you are serious. It also lets the team look at the package and match you with the right person. Each teammate brings a different background and a different set of scars. The point is to get you in front of someone who recognizes the work, not someone guessing at it. Sometimes we bring a second teammate into the call so you get more than one read. Then we set up a Teams meeting and work the problem in front of you. That is the whole path. It is not a board. It is not a test. It is a conversation with people who came from the field and have to go back to it. It also does not have to be one and done. Reach out again when life changes or an opportunity shows up. I deleted this email traffic when I was in the shop. A lot of the field still does. Some people even set up workflows to keep the clutter down. Some of us do not sit in a traditional office. The work itself keeps people off the message traffic. I know that. I also know what I could not see from my seat: how much of the field is moving at once, and how many good people never get told the next step until it is too late to take it. We are the people on the ‘From’ line. We came from the career field. We are going back to it. You do not have to want this seat. You do have to decide whether the next email is clutter, or a chance to leverage resources from someone who knows firsthand what it takes, and is, to be CE. If this only makes you open the next message, that is enough. Look at who sent it. Then ask what it would do for the person already thinking about leaving, staying stuck, or stepping up.
