Humble Design Togetherness to End Homelessness

After seeing firsthand how designing and furnishing a home can change the lives of a recently homeless family, Darren Helm, and his wife Devon, wanted to help.

It's important for me, my wife, and our kids that we do what we can during this time”

— Darren Helm

DETROIT, MICHIGAN, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Local Red Wing Player, Darren Helm and his family, want to share their support for a local nonprofit, Humble Design. Several years ago the Detroit Red Wings, and the Lady Wings, teamed up to completely furnish the home of the Finley’s who had been staying in a homeless shelter until they could transition to permanent housing. After learning that the Finley’s had nothing but an air mattress, a few camp chairs, and not much else, they volunteered to work for a day putting together all the things the Humble Design team had curated from their warehouse. It was an unforgettable experience for Darren and his wife, Devon. When they heard that Humble Design was hosting a Virtual 5K August 31-September 7, they wanted to help. Darren told us, “It’s important to me, my wife, and our kids that we do what we can during this time.”

Humble Design now has locations in Detroit, Chicago, Cleveland, San Diego, and Seattle where they use donations of furniture and household goods from their local communities and businesses to fully design, and furnish the houses of those exiting homelessness. Planning virtual events to help raise the needed funds to help more families devastated by homelessness, is one of the ways they are addressing the challenges of COVID-19.

Silver Diner/Silver Owners Reinvent Restaurant Model for Post COVID with Customized Air Filtration/Purification System

Example of small machine that filter, purifies and ionizes with HEPA filter and ultraviolet light.

Air purification/filtration and ultraviolet light systems are installed throughout the restaurants. Ultraviolet lights are also inside the restaurant’s HVAC system.

Large air purifier/filtration that also uses ultraviolet light

Large air purifiers with ultraviolet light and HEPA filtration are used in high-trafficked areas such as the hostess stand.

Outdoor dining is also offered in tents.

In addition to upgrading inside ventilation, Silver Diner added outdoor dining to most of its restaurants that did not already offer the option.

First restaurant group in the nation to implement customized VLED HVAC/UV-C light system

Our goal is to make indoor dining as safe as possible to outdoor dining. We are investing in this because we believe this is the restaurant model of the future.”

— Robert Giaimo, co-founder

ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — For more than 30 years, forward-thinking and innovation, to enhance customer health and wellness, have been critical components to the success of Silver Diner. Building on its history as leaders in implementing healthy eating with farm-to-table and flexitarian options, the restaurant has retooled for today’s lifestyle in the wake of COVID-19 using multiple dining protocols, safety practices and cutting-edge technology. To expand on its promise of something for everyone, the restaurant instituted multiple dining options from low- contact carhop carry-out to tented outdoor cafés. To make indoor dining comfortable again and to honor their commitment to employee and customer health and wellness, Silver Diner founders are having installed a unique, Veteran LED customized interior air filtration and purification system to make dining indoors as close you can come to outdoor dining.

This is the first time this comprehensive and customized system has been used in restaurants. The system includes germicidal UV-C light, bipolar ionization technology, and HEPA filtration. Air purifiers, mounted throughout each restaurant, work to continuously clean the air by using all three technologies simultaneously. Germicidal UV-C lights installed throughout the HVAC system work to disinfect air and surfaces inside the system. Heavy duty handheld UV-C light sterilizers are being used on high touch areas as part of the closing duties of the staff. At night, when the restaurant is closed, the interior is bathed in germicidal UV-C light to help kill pathogens in the air and sterilize surfaces. The system eliminates 99.9% of pathogens encountered.

“Our goal is to make indoor dining as safe as possible to outdoor dining,” said Silver Diner group Co-founder and President Robert Giaimo. “We are investing in this because we believe this is the restaurant model of the future. It maximizes the safety of our employees and our guests.” The system that has been created is a comprehensive package of the best products and technologies available for a restaurant. All 20 restaurants will have the system in place by Aug. 12.

For more than a century, UV-C light has been used to clean air, surfaces, and water. It has been used effectively for years in hospitals, health care facilities, laboratories and schools, to name a few. On behalf of Signify, a lighting company, Boston University recently studied the impact of UV-C light on COVID-19 and determined that it definitely inactivated the virus.

Throughout the pandemic, Silver Diner and Silver, American Brasserie have provided customers with options. Implementing a robust takeout and delivery business at the onset, the restaurants then moved to establish outdoor dining at each of 20 restaurants. While some of its newer restaurants have built-in patios, most do not. Attractive tents with outdoor lighting and landscaping were installed at every location. A “Curbside Carhop” was created as well so customers had (and still have) the option of takeout, curbside carhop, delivery, indoor or outdoor dining.

Prior to being allowed to open indoors, the Silver Diner/Silver team began planning for the return of customers. They made a large investment in plexiglass and had it installed between tables and booths, they rearranged the restaurant to maintain distancing, they added hand sanitizer stations and removed all condiments and seasonings from tables. They had menus printed on anti-microbial paper. All of this in addition to the usual wearing of masks and gloves, temperature checks and minimum to no contact.

As it came time when limited customers could dine inside, the Silver Diner executive team researched the market to see if there was anything else they could do. “First of all, we wanted our employees to feel as safe as possible. Secondly, we wanted our customers to feel comfortable dining with us,” explained Giaimo. “We want to be their home away from home and we’re committed to doing whatever it takes to get them back.”

The system being installed at Silver Diner and Silver is by Veteran LED, a Richmond-based company founded by veteran Chris Rawlings. Rawlings served two tours in Iraq as a U.S. Marine and has an extensive background in lighting technology and building customized systems. Rawlings researched the top products on the market and created the unique, comprehensive package for the Silver Diner restaurant group. “We are excited to work with Silver and Silver Diner in becoming the first restaurant chain to implement this cutting-edge technology,” said Rawlings. “This pandemic is forcing businesses, engineers, architects and more, to rethink how proven technology and a little innovation can go a long way in helping to support a safer environment for all building occupants. Air quality and healthy environments are on the forefront of all of our minds right now. We’re obligated to use our resources and knowledge, based on scientific evidence, to effectively address this concern.”

Silver Diner has long been known as an industry leader. Before farm-to-table soared in popularity, Silver Diner implemented the practice at all its diners. More than three years ago, award-winning Executive Chef and Co-founder (also winner of “Chopped”), Ype Von Hengst, added vegan, plant-based and gluten free menu items. This while still balancing “diner classics” for long-time loyal diner-lover customers. “Flexibility and adaptability have been key to our success,” added Giaimo.

This week, Silver Diner is opening its 18th restaurant in Alexandria, Virginia. The restaurant (4630 King Street, Alexandria) will feature an outdoor patio, full bar and will have the new HVAC/UV-C light system and all of the other COVID-19 practices in place. “We recognize that it’s an unusual time to open a restaurant,” Giaimo added. “But we also recognize that people want to dine out and have healthy menu options. We hope all of our efforts will bring our customers back to their home away from home.

Brain Health Initiative Launches Community Study

Featuring collaborative leadership from Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital and Academy for Brain Health and Performance

The current state of science and real-life experience demonstrates there is a global brain health crisis and most of the public is in the dark regarding its ability to take control of brain health.”

— Stephanie Peabody, Ph.D.

LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLORIDA, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — An initial brain health study, part of the Brain Health Initiative, is being launched in Lakewood Ranch and the greater Suncoast region. The study is part of a larger initiative developed with the collaborative leadership of Massachusetts General Hospital, a Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital. It strives to create brain healthy communities that promote brain health and fight brain illness, while optimizing brain performance at every age.

The approach includes a collective impact framework that seeks to engage community members in the full brain health promotion, research, and innovative process. Once fully launched and underway, the BHI is anticipated to be the largest brain healthy living laboratory in the world, and will have developed a replicable and scalable model to create other thriving brain healthy communities.

Jennifer Bencie, M.D., health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Manatee County, and Andy Guz, CEO of Lakewood Ranch Medical Center, are also working with BHI on this early step in the initiative’s effort to build brain healthy communities. Bencie and Guz and the Brain Health Initiative’s Founder and Executive Director, Stephanie Peabody, Ph.D., are encouraging randomly selected Lakewood Ranch residents to participate in the pilot study.

“After decades of neuroscience research, while science brings opportunity and hope, we’re in a crisis,” said Peabody. “The current state of science and real-life experience demonstrates that there is a global brain health crisis and most of the public is in the dark regarding its ability to take control of brain health and daily performance.” She continued, “Surveys have found that a majority of Americans consider dementia a natural part of getting older, while scientists say the opposite. Many experts consider brain health to be the biggest medical priority of the 21st century.”

“The Florida Suncoast region has a rare opportunity to participate in the pilot of what will become a world-class, comprehensive initiative of brain health,” said Guz. Randomly selected Lakewood Ranch adult residents will begin receiving invitations to participate in the brain health pilot study in the next several weeks.

“The pilot study is the next of many brain health projects initiated in and planned for the Suncoast region toward the effort of improving brain health and optimizing performance outcomes for people of all ages, while also decreasing the gap between life span and brain span,” explained Peabody. “The Brain Health Initiative will use data analyzed from the pilot to inform the identification of innovative brain health interventions to bring to the Suncoast region through the developing Brain Health Innovation Lab. This lab is being designed as an accelerator lab where solutions from a global explosion of brain health innovations can be brought and tested with the region’s residents, students, workforce and visitors—young and older—to participate in clinical trials that promote brain health, fight brain illness, and optimize performance.”

The program was created by Peabody and her colleagues who looked at the current brain health crisis and decades of advances in neuroscience, medicine, and public health as an opportunity to protect and enhance brain health and optimize brain performance outcomes. The American Heart Association states that 3 out of 5 of all Americans will develop a brain disease in their lifetime. “Understanding what causes brain health problems and how best to prevent brain illness remains one of the biggest medical mysteries of our time,” said Bencie. “Especially now—when discoveries related to brain health and brain illness, across the lifespan, are critically needed worldwide. I hope every community member who is contacted will step up to help this team of scientists and our region by participating in this study.”

The Brain Health Initiative officially launched in 2018 with a survey—the Lakewood Ranch Brain Health Community Stakeholder Prioritization Survey. The results of that survey informed the development of the pilot study. The pilot study will collect data specifically about how Lakewood Ranch residents function mentally, socially, cognitively and biologically. It will pay special attention to what Lakewood Ranch reported as brain health priorities. Epidemiologist and Research Director of the Brain Health Initiative, Erin Dunn, Ph.D. explained “adult residents of the community will be randomly selected to participate in a confidential online questionnaire and complete a series of cognitive computer games. The survey includes questions about health habits, medical conditions, social relationships, recreational activities and experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those participating will also be asked to share information about health behaviors such as exercise, nutrition, smoking, alcohol usage, sleep patterns, as well as demographic information.”

The pilot study will help researchers capture risk and protective factors linked to brain health across multiple domains. They’ll incorporate key “lessons learned” from other successful community-based, population health projects including the Framingham Heart Study, The Blue Zones and Shape Up Sommerville to identify ways to protect brain health across the lifespan of an individual and at the community level.

In addition to establishing a robust brain health baseline of the community that will lead to greater opportunities for scientific discovery, the goal of the BHI is to recruit brain health scientists, innovators, and entrepreneurs from around the world to also support the brain health of the region. “This program is a multi-generational living lab,” said Peabody. “We hope to gain significant insights into learning the best possible ways to positively impact brain health. After decades of neuroscience research, we have an opportunity to bring hope to this crisis so that the public will be able to use ‘prevention and early detection’ as a viable path to significantly reducing incidence of brain illness.”

Fireplace Hazards due to Hurricane Laura

Safety is a large concern with fireplaces after flooding given fire/carbon monoxide risks & potential control system
malfunctions after submerged in water

With many fireplaces submerged in water due to flooding – it becomes more crucial they are replaced given the fire/carbon monoxide hazards that can arise by using the existing one.”

— Todd Harkrider

HOUSTON, TX, USA, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — We believe there is a large number of homeowners who are still uninformed about the fire/carbon monoxide hazards that can arise from using a fireplace that has been flooded or has been exposed to water, or from damage caused by significant winds. Some of these fireplaces have now been submerged in water multiple times given all the flooding we’ve had in Texas the last several years and it’s becoming even more crucial these fireplaces get flagged as unsafe/not functional and replaced. Very high winds could also cause damage to the chimney or if you have a metal fireplace/round metal chimney pipe for the pipe to become disconnected and cause a fire/carbon monoxide hazard.

At least two of the larger fireplace manufacturers – Hearth & Home Technologies (HHT) and Innovative Hearth Products (IHP) – recommend homeowners replace their fireplaces and deem the warranties voided if they have been partially or fully exposed to water. Safety is the fireplace manufacturers biggest concern – with a couple larger concerns of water touching the fireplace is resulting holes from rust and the fire/carbon monoxide risks associated with those holes as well as potential control system malfunctions.

Gas log burners/controls present the same issue with the control system being submerged and attempted operation may result in fire or explosion resulting in property damage, personal injury or loss of life. If fireplace damage was the result of flooding during Hurricane Harvey, Tropical Depression Imelda, Hurricane Laura or another flood, we recommend checking the homeowners insurance policy for any benefits related to flooding.

Below is a sample list of flooding/chimney water leak symptoms and the importance of having your fireplace and chimney inspected by a chimney professional as opposed to a roofer:
• Rusted Fireplace: Prefabricated fireplaces (metal fireplaces and round metal chimney pipe) are prone to rust given it’s typically just a thin sheet metal frame. Therefore if they’ve been exposed to a flood or if meaningful water has touched it the likelihood of it rusting increases significantly. These rust spots can easily form holes and become a fire/carbon monoxide hazard and typically should be replaced.
• Control System Malfunctions: Any electrical wires or control systems exposed to water could become faulty and cause malfunctions. This can lead to fire/carbon monoxide hazards as these malfunctions could lead to the gas remaining open or shorts in the system despite users trying to turn off the system remotely. The control system, and possibly the full fireplace, should be replaced.
• Missing/Damaged Chimney Cap: A chimney cap works like an umbrella to help block rain from pouring straight down your chimney. A chimney cap is also a great wildlife guard to ensure it keeps birds and animals out of your chimney. Having a proper chimney cap installed is one of the best long term investments for your chimney.
• Cracked Chimney Crowns: Chimney crowns are the cement part on top of your chimney – it is made to help seal the chimney and divert water from resting or entering your brick from the top of the chimney. Unfortunately, a lot of chimneys were built with an inadequate mortar mix and prone to crack, chip or deteriorate over years of weather abuse. Having a proper chimney crown reduces the weathering effect on the chimney increases its longevity.
• Cracked and Missing Mortar Joints: Mortar joints are the spaces between bricks that are filled with mortar or grout. Over time, weathering and decay can cause voids in the joints and allow an increased amount of water to enter the chimney area. Tuckpointing or repointing the defective mortar joints will help reduce the amount of water entering your chimney area.
• Cracked or Aged Brick: Like mortar joints, brick also weathers and decays over time. Especially in Texas where we have a lot of porous brick, it is more prone to absorb water and cause a break down in the brick and mortar particles over time. Having a water repellant, applied by a chimney professional, which allows the brick to continue to breathe should slow down erosion and meaningfully reduce the amount of water entering your chimney area from the aged or cracked brick.
• Faulty Flashing: Connection between the roof and chimney is typically made with a watertight metal flashing. Sometimes the flashing was installed improperly and other times it becomes worn or corroded over time. Ensuring the flashing area is sound should stop water leaks coming from the flashing area.

MB&A's ExAM4Inspections.com Salesforce AppExchange app supports HUD Housing Choice Voucher Physical Inspections Team's win of Gears of Government Award

We are incredibly proud of the HUD Housing Choice Voucher Physical Inspections Team's Gears of Government win and excited that our software is able to play a role in supporting this critical mission.”

— Joshua Millsapps, Managing Partner

ARLINGTON, VA, UNITED STATES, August 31, 2020 /EINPresswire.com/ — Playing a key role in the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) inspection efforts, MB&A's ExAM4Inspections.com Salesforce AppExchange has helped the Housing Choice Voucher Physical Inspections Team to conduct an average of 5,000 monthly inspections. Most importantly, the app supports HUD's mission to create strong, sustainable, inclusive communities, and quality affordable housing for all.

It also supports the Department’s additional protocols including: Housing Quality Standards (HQS), Uniform Physical Condition Standards for Vouchers (UPCS-V), Uniform Physical Condition Standards (UPCS) and National Standards For The Physical Inspection Of Real Estate (NSPIRE). Not only has this streamlined their inspection processes, it has increased customer satisfaction from 22% to 84%. Quite simply, the HUD team has proven that an electronic inspection model is far more effective and user-friendly than the previous paper-based HQS inspection program.

In August MB&A received notice that the HUD Housing Choice Voucher Physical Inspections Team leveraging ExAM4Inspections.com to support its program had won a Gears of Government Award in recognition of its efforts on behalf of the program. The award recognizes individuals and teams nationwide for their “mission results, customer service, and accountable stewardship” to the American public and is awarded by the Executive Office of the President.
