Intero Real Estate Foundation has recently awarded The Grateful Garment Project $10,000 to help fund their Youth Incentive Program. In addition, Intero Real Estate Services will partner with The Grateful Garment Project’s Operation emBRAce, which has the goal of collecting 20,000 sports bras to distribute to victims of sexual violence.

Often, an individual who has been sexually violated is asked to surrender their clothing for evidence during the forensic examination so the clothing can be processed. Without new clothing available, many times these victims are provided hospital scrubs or gowns to wear home. These new bras will be made available at the hospitals where forensic examinations (aka rape kits) are completed.

“Sports bras are an essential part of returning dignity to victims of sexual violence,” said Ms. Blanchard. “However, they also are the least donated and most needed item we have. Sports bras provide the right level of comfort for victims who might have injuries.”

About The Grateful Garment Project

The Grateful Garment Project’s mission is to restore dignity to the victims of sexual violence, and was originally started in 2011 as a Capstone Graduation Project for founder Lisa J. Blanchard’s undergraduate degree. During a chance conversation with a stranger at a women's retreat, she learned that once a victim of sexual violence undergoes a SART exam (aka "Rape Kit"), she or he is often asked to surrender clothing for forensic evidence, leaving the victim with nothing to wear home except a disposable hospital gown or paper scrubs. Blanchard decided to start a clothing closet for the Santa Clara County SART facility located at Valley Medical Center in San Jose. Before her five-week project came to a close, she was approached by a representative from Santa Cruz County pleading for the same type of assistance. Thus, The Grateful Garment Project, as a nonprofit organization, was born. The Grateful Garment Project now provides resources to sexual violence service providers throughout California.
